UAE national media emerges as first line of defence amid Iranian attacks
NMA opens annual Ramadan gathering at Atlantis The Royal, Dubai
DUBAI – This Ramadan, the UAE faces extraordinary circumstances following hostile Iranian missile and UAV attacks targeting the nation’s skies.
Speaking at the National Media Authority’s (NMA) annual Ramadan gathering at Atlantis the Royal Hotel, Abdulla bin Mohammed bin Butti Al Hamed, Chairman of the NMA, praised the armed forces for their heroic response, noting that the attacks were “shattered against the rock of resilience” forged by the defenders of the country.
Al Hamed highlighted the critical role of professional media during such periods, describing it as the “first line of defence against disinformation.”
The gathering brought together senior officials, editors-in-chief, media company representatives, and social media influencers to exchange expertise on enhancing media performance and reinforcing the UAE’s standing on the global media stage.
Leadership guidance
Al Hamed commended President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s strategic foresight, emphasising that effective leadership in times of prosperity is matched by the ability to safeguard the nation during crises. He explained that the President’s approach relies on calm insight, confidence in national resilience, and the ability to convert challenges into opportunities for societal cohesion.
“This leadership wisdom guides national media towards balanced discourse, reassuring hearts while informing minds,” Al Hamed said. He stressed that responsible journalism during crises often has a more powerful impact than the events themselves, shaping public perception and maintaining societal stability.
Armed Forces heroism
The Chairman highlighted the exceptional professionalism of the UAE Armed Forces in intercepting hostile missiles and UAVs, calling the operations “heroic scenes” that instil confidence among citizens and residents. He noted that the defenders operate under a solid combat doctrine, demonstrating unwavering commitment to protecting national sovereignty and security.

Media attendees and social media influencers praised the military’s vigilance, describing their actions as an “impregnable fortress” safeguarding the nation. They also noted that the courage and competence displayed during these attacks reflect the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty, and sacrifice.
Media responsibility
Al Hamed explained that modern conflicts extend beyond conventional battlefields into the media sphere, where misinformation campaigns represent a parallel front. He stressed that national media must verify facts, reinforce truth, and prevent misleading narratives from influencing public opinion.
“Our national media is a battalion stationed in the trenches of awareness and a fortified fence protecting the home front,” he said. He warned that some international media institutions have abandoned ethical standards, adopting agendas that compromise credibility, and urged strategic caution, including selective boycotts against platforms that undermine integrity.

Al Hamed also addressed social media users, emphasising the importance of reflecting the values of the “Sons of Zayed” – nobility, dignity, and self-confidence – in their online presence. He advised against engaging with offensive accounts or sharing unverified content, which could form part of psychological warfare.
Strengthening awareness
Participants reaffirmed their commitment to accurate reporting, public awareness, and national responsibility. They acknowledged the spread of rumours and emphasised media’s role in maintaining societal stability until the UAE overcomes this phase of tension.
Al Hamed concluded that the Iranian attacks have strengthened national unity, highlighting that responsible communication represents the first “bullet” against aggression and disinformation. The gathering reinforced the vital relationship between armed forces and media in safeguarding national security and promoting trust among citizens.
The meeting also discussed global media trends, promoting cooperation and the exchange of expertise to adapt to rapid sector transformations. Officials highlighted the importance of ethical reporting and strategic communication in supporting the UAE’s development journey and international reputation.
By fostering collaboration between local and international media institutions, the NMA aims to maintain the UAE’s status as a hub for credible information, reinforcing public trust and societal cohesion even amid regional tensions.
